Quote for spraying a smooth rear bumper....
« on: 29 July 2011, 18:34 »
I've been working on a smooth rear bumper and I'm near the primer and top coat stages. I have only got one coat so far which is £200 to spray the bumper and the rear valance that I have as I sprayed that myself and I fancy having it looking top notch. The sprayer I spoke to said he would prefer to use the high build primer he has as stuff from an aerosol isn't up to the job. Obviously if I did the primer myself with aerosols that would save a bit more money.

Is £200 a fair price or should I shop around a bit more? Would me primering it with aerosols cause and major problems?

High build primer is essential for this type of job, don't waste extra money priming yourself, any decent paint guy will only rip it all off, to see what you've done underneath!
£200 is a very fair price, whether its inclusive, or plus VAT...  the main thing is that you're confident about the bodyshop that you have in mind, to carry out the work...

Yeah it's the high build stuff he is gunna use. The garage has come recommended by a few people and I have seen plenty of pics of their work on the owners facebook page.

The saying that "you pay peanuts and you get monkeys" did not come about by accident.
There is, however, a difference between cheap and getting value for money.

You don't own a Mk2, you support it.

theres a place near me who charge £200-250 for a bumper repaint and they are sh!t, so saying you get what you pay for isn't always true

No one will ever win with you! a self prepared bumper could easily take up 5 hours work to put right, and for a decent painter to stake his reputation on it would almost certainly require rectification work, you should know this, especially with all your experience!... 5 hrs @ a dirt cheap £25 per hr, plus a dirt cheap £60 for paint and materials, stiil comes out at £185, and thats without VAT
OP may not know anyone, to get it done at mates rates, so may have done some asking round locally to him, and found someone reputable, the £200 quote is therefore reasonable, and not OTT, and I bet you'd jump at the chance to earn less money than the standard (ish) £30-£35 per hour that insurance companies are paying these days
So to the OP, again, £200 is a fair price, maybe not the cheapest, yes you could shop around for a lower price... best advice, is to go to whoever you're happy with to work on your car, and not to worry about the price of a round of drinks
