Is my wheel bearing gone???
« on: 13 April 2005, 19:10 »
Just got my Mk2 Golf 8v 1991 this morning.  There is a rythymic knocking noise all the way up to 55mph.  It fluctuates directly with forward speed.  It is still there when at speed and out of gear.  Does this sound like a wheel bearing?  Above 55mph, there is still a noise but not as dud. dud. dud. dud as at lower speeds.  On the MOT pass certificate, it mentioned that the rear bearing was slack.  Even though it sounds like the front, could it be the rear?

There is also a vibration noise coming from the passenger side near the speaker when the fan is in position 1 and 2 but not on 3.  Any ideas?

Does it sound like a loud humming noise? if so try change coasting with the engine off, if the noise is still there then its a wheel bearing.
Jack each corner up, without the brakes applied(handbrake off for the rears), try rocking the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock positions.
If there is any play on the rears then they can be adjusted up.
If there is any play in the fronts then they will need to be renewed. Also check that the wheels spin freely and do not bind.

no, it's not a humming noise, definately a knocking.  I was thinking CV joint at first but surely this would have failed the mot that it went through this morning?  I'll try jacking it up now as i have access to a hydraulic jack etc.  fingers crossed i haven't bought a poo motor.

Does it knock if you put the clutch in?
If it doesn't then its not a cv.

Check the wheels as i said for play.
Sounds stupid, but you have checked that your wheel bolts are tight?

it would of only failed MOT if the cv boot was fooked n split, not if the cv joint was fooked

If the cv joint is that far gone it will knock whether its in gear or not as your still spinning the balls around inside the joint. obviously it wont be as pronounced as it would be if the car had the drag of the drivetrain on it.

If it was a wheel bearing that far gone you would know about it to be honest, when they get to the knocking stage your pretty much going know its a bearing.

Sounding silly here but you havent got a gravel drive or run over a stone or nail.

The vibration noise coming from the left passenger side when the fan is on is the fan, its located under the glove box, if its very noisy then the bearing in it has sucked up too much dust and has either become dry or its knackered.

i'm really starting to think it is the CV at fault here.  I jacked the f/n side up this afternoon.  stuck her in gear and accelerated to 40mph.  It wasn't a knock but a whiny/rumble.  So I am thinking it turns to a knocking noise when there is a load on the car.  Roughly guys, how much should a garag be charging for this, I don't like being made a fool.  Eurocarparts reckon £35 for the cv outer?
