mk1 gti not started for 2 years, help
« on: 23 July 2011, 22:37 »
Hi guys, my mk1 golf has not been started for 2 years. Every so often i have cranked it over to avoid ceasing. Today i have finally got round to having a go at getting it running. I managed to get it to start but only runs for a couple of seconds. I have fuel up to the fuel filter but when i losen off the injector pipes on the top of the metering unit there is none. If i continue to start the car after approx 3 times i will not fire up, however if i leave it for a few minutes then it fires up and runs for a few seconds. Any ideas!

Thanks

I would start with draining the fuel tank and trying fresh fuel.

^^^ This plus there may be loads of sh*t in the tank/system. what condition did you leave the car in when you put it to bed?

I would also check to see if your fuel pump is working correctly.  When you turn the key to position 2, can you hear the pump prime for a couple of seconds? When yuo go to start the car and it runs for those few seconds, can you hear the pump running again?

It's been garaged all the time. The tank had very little in it before i put a jerry can full in.

I meant condition of the car before you put it in the garage, filters, fuel etc.  For reference, its not best to store a car with naff all fuel in it.  You're probably going to need a new filter and more fuel in it than a jerry can,  it will be pulling in crud from the bottom of the tank and possibly blocking up the filter.

Have you checked the pump operation yet like I suggested?

if no fuel to injectors but fuel getting to metering head then i would say that the metering head is gummed up with crap and therefore fubar, try a known working metering head

It can be removed and cleaned intact.  Seriously wouldn't recommend taking it to bits, its a very complex bit of kit, specialist only.  As said, source another one if its at fault.

The golf now starts and runs nicely, seems to have sorted itself. Happy days.
