knocking
« on: 20 July 2011, 23:46 »
Well i am slowly tarting the A3 up and getting it up to scratch.. but i still have a problem.. i have changed both CV joints for brand new ones and im still getting a knocking noise on hard left turn has anyone got ideas ?? i have been told maybe a front bearing is shot but tbh im running out of ideas and dont wana keep replacing working parts..

Also i think i have an engine mount possibly on its way out as when i let off in gears i can hear a knocking noise which i believe could be engine rocking ??

Any ideas much appreciated

suspension? top mounts? have u checked these items?
yes could be a bearing, jack up wheel and give it a play, if its all over the place...bearing... easy peasy

engine mount knocking is easy to tell too, shake the engine if its moving about the bay then the mounts are shot, if its when you decelerate it could be the front mount.

Good call on suspension will check the top mounts as soon as i should think the previous owner replaced them when he put the coilovers on but you never know.. its weird how its only when turn fast hard left aswell ??

Its definately the engine mount its just finding which one.. its rocks like a b!tch when starting lol

Check the gearbox mount. Apparently it's a common enough failure on mk5 platform cars. I had a lot of knocking about when setting off. When the gearbox mount was changed it went away

I left it to my local VW specialist to fix. I'm sure it came in ~€150 parts+labour. It had a few things done at the same time though so I can't be sure of an exact amount.
