rough idle
« on: 20 July 2011, 20:17 »
any idea what could be causing this?

only had the car a few weeks but its been this way ever since i bought it. i noticed a broken wire on the air intake sensor which i repaired, i took the induction kit off which was almost completely blocked and have professionally cleaned it, its like new now but still no joys with better idling

its only cut out on me once when pulling up to a junction. it fires up perfectly but just sometime seems it wants to cut out

Out of interest what engine code is it 1.8, 2l 8v or 16v If its engine code 2E on the 8v or abf 16v it could also be the ISV valve needs a clean or renewing. As for the cleaning throttle body you will need to take your intake pipe of the TB get some carb cleaner and a good rag, Open the butter fly on the throttle by pulling the throttle back and clean the best you can or take the TB off completely best to get a new gasket for it though as you need to make sure you seal them very well once you have finished cleaning  Easy job really mate

Its the 2L 8V engine. Will see if I can clean the TB today although ideally I'd like to remove it to clean it and therefore need to get a new gasket for it. Really appreciate the help everyone. If the TB needs replacing is it worth getting an updated one?

It wont, and no. However in the very unlikely event that it is knackered, I have a spare I could be persuaded to part with!

They just get filthy around the butterfly valve and restrict/interrupt airflow. Its the most common thing for rough idles and some clean them as much as every year. Trust me, when you take your intake pipe of, you will see.

another thing to check is the maf. Induction kits can coat these with oil meaning the car will display symptoms like described and if thats the case some electrical cleaner for the wire is needed (you can test it by unplugging it and seeing if the engine changes how it's running)

worth checking for air leaks in the intake and crank-case-breather pipes too.

You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.
