More power from my 1.8t apu....Passat content!
« on: 19 July 2011, 22:04 »
Well I have read lots on Golf mk4 1.8t tuning but data on my engine is harder to come by, so I thought I should ask here on where to start with tuning. I have vag-com' the car and no faults show engine wise and I want better all round drive ability so maybe just stage 1 chip (clutch friendly) but is there anything else I should consider too?

and what sort of price for a re-chip and what ever else is recommended? (It's a 100% standard 99 model APU Passat so it looks like it can't be flashed through the diagnostic port?)
cheers

APU had the very early me7 ecu which can be obd mapped.. But not by all tuning tools. Out of the 7 obd tuning tool I have only one will do the APU.

 A good running APU will map to 180-190bhp 200-210lbft. You would need a good quality DV and panel filter and to run super unleaded as cylinder temps get high due to the cat location and heat build up.

But IMO even before getting a remap carried out get the oil pick up pipe due, being a 99-T I Would say it's partially blocked (if it's not already bees changed)  it's the oil pick up pipe which is the biggest issue wirh the APU engine after remapping, I have had many on the dyno where the oil light has come on.

It's had a new oil pump about 3 months ago, so is well sorted there (that was due to the oil light issue!) and I only run it on super unleaded  :smiley:

I will look for a panel filter and also look at a dv (007 type.... although I can get another make at low cost!).

How much for a map? (pm if you prefer)

Ah Bradley I remember meeting you a couple of years ago when we picked up a load of MK3 spares for my brothers (I had a black Z4 you might recall).

If you can bring the car over to us in Leeds, we can tune it for £199 and as its you I'll see if I can convince Elite to let me use their dyno for a free run for you ;)

I think 90'% of the APUs I have worked on have had exact same issues, so i like to point it out first rather than cause customers hardship..lol
Pipercross filter = £35
007P = £85  or a 007p branded from Awesome £66 http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/product.php?xProd=13863&xSec=9920.

We can carry out a remap and rolling road for £200 all inc. (you can find a our summer offer £50 off voucher in the current edition for the Golf+ magazine :wink:.)

ok before getting carried away with a map etc I am trying to get some engine health info with vcds.... but I'm failing! It scans everything except the engine and come up with a controller issue and something about baud rates! can anyone help with whats wrong? (my cable is by ftdi chip) it scans fine on an auto scan and shows no errors but I want some live testing....

cheers  :cool:
