Buying a MK 3 Golf GTi - 8V or 16V?
« on: 12 April 2005, 13:30 »
Hi,

Im currently looking for a 95-97 MK3 Golf Gti. Hoping to get one with mileage around 60,000 to 90,000.

Some things are a must re. the black heated leathers

It will probably be a 8v although 16v is a possibility.

This is my first MK3 Golf. Is there anywhere (or someone) who could help me with things to lok for?

I.E. What can usually go wrong with these?

Also does anybody know how much difference there is between, colour concept, anniversary versions etc.

Is colour concept the best for leathers?

Would you buy a MK3 without service history or previous MOT's? Does VW have a record of service on their computers?

Thanks

P.S. If anybody wants to sell their pls do reply....

Get a 16v if insurance allows.  Running costs are pretty similar for 8 and 16vs.

Read back through the mk3 section for common problems and faults.  There is a big issue with stalling, cutting out juddering etc with quite a few causes and solutions as you will see from the many many posts on the subject.

Most of the solutions are inexpensive and easy so don't let it put you off mk3s.

Also see the mk3 buying guide in the mk3 section.

Differences between anniversary, colour concepts are purely cosmetic.  There is no mechanical or performance differences.  I.E colour concepts all have colour coded leather interiors and bbs solitude wheels and come in some exclusive colours.  With nice recaro seats too.

Anniversarys have 16" bbs RX2 wheels, anniverasy checked interiors with red seat belts, red stiching on the gear gaitor and steering wheel, smoked front fog lights, golf ball gear knob and other stuff probably.

Getting a colour concept obviously gurantees leather, but the colours are not to everyones taste, although there are black ones with black leather.

Don't pay over the odds for a special edition unless it's in mint condition.

I wouldn't bother with a car without service history, golf gti's weren't exactly cheap so there are plenty around that have been looked after by people with enough cash to maintain them properly.  Cars with none or with patchy service histories just raise too many questions about their past.

Leather is a fairly rare option on normal 8v and only slightly more common on 16vs so be prepared for a good hunt to find a car with leather that's worth buying.

VW do keep service records, if the car has been serviced at a main dealer.  Although the records are not always complete.

Good luck with the search!

(can you tell i'm bored at work today?)

so is mine a CC 16v? :)

btw.. one more thing not mentioned

heaters, air-conditioning and climatronic.

heaters.. just the standard old thing in most cars..

air-con really just lets you blow cold air / demist, good for summer.

climatronic(i believe) lets you set a temperature and the car will "make it so" as picard would say

Used to have a '97 MK3 16v GTI 3dr in 'Black Magic'... now have a '55 Civic Type-S...

That colour concept sounds good.

Make sure the cambelt has been changed.  Take it for as long a test drive as possible, and if it's good beat the price down as much as possible.

Could be a bargain.

Cambelt change on its own is pointless, at 78k the tensioner MUST of been done as well.
