Immobiliser fault code

Once in a while I got start up and the dash beeps and lights up with "immobiliser active" or something....
I'll take the key out, put it back in and I'm away.  This last happened about 2-3 weeks ago.
I've just scanned for codes to find the immobiliser fault code on there again, so deleted.  Its been on there a couple of times now.  What's that all about?

I've read about people whacking their key and it then working, but I though there was a bit more to it than that   
I aint paying VW to resync the key as it works 99.9% of the time. 
The coil seems a candidate, but I bet that's a beeeee-atch to replace!?  Will monitor to see if it gets worse.
