I've just picked up a Passat DSG today. The stop start on that started working after about 3 miles from cold and very quickly after the car has come to a halt. I have discovered but by applying less pressure to the brake pedal, it will not activate.

However if I'm stationary for more than just a quick pause, I go into neutral and take my foot off the brake, as I'm sure the bloke behind doesn't want to stare at my brake lights, but doing this starts the engine again. The system contradicts considerate driving practices in my opinion.

I've still got the Golf. The new Passat is to replace my old Passat.

As I said earlier

I had a Golf Match BMT for about 3 weeks last year and in that time, the stop/start activated once. That was when I was waiting at a level crossing. I'm lucky enough to live/work and drive around in the countryside, so I'm never stationary long enough for it to be of benefit.

That Golf had it as part of the BMT pack.

So far so good. It's no ball of fire, but should at least be considerably more economical than my previous Passat. The ride is excellent, even with sports suspension, but I guess that's down to the 17" wheels and the RNS 315 is very intuitive to use. I'm used to everything else as most of it is similar to the Golf, so the new Passat feels reassuringly homely.

I think we're going to get along just fine.

Is it an improvement over the previous one? Well that remains to be seen. It is nearly 9 years old, done 109,000 miles and everything still works. The only think that ever broke was a power steering hose union. I wonder how much of the new car will still be working when it reaches that sort of age?

As promised. Better ones to follow with a nicer background once it's had a proper clean.

I hope my retention certificate comes today. It won't feel like my car until it has my number plate on it.
