Have you checked the thermostat?  Seems simple, but you never know?

You're asking a relative Golf novice, so not many more bright ideas from me!  Based that on problems with an old Triumph in my "buy it cheap, spend nothing on it" days.....

sounds to me like you need a new thermostat as i remember it opens when the engine is at a set temperature and lets the hot water flow around heaters and stuff so if it's not opening you will probably get that but check your temperature sender.
know what you mean about the rain never whilst at work usually when just starting.

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08

I had the same problem in my wifes car that recently had head work. Its crappy little Suzuki thing but the theory is the same. The centre pin on the thermostat had been bent causing it to stay open. If it is open when you take it out of a cold engine then you know that its goosed. It was completely freezing in the car even after about 5 miles driving.

If the car is cold inside then its probably not a faullty sender.
