Hi guys, I've been ploughing through all the MK4 and audio specific pages and have not found anything relevant. I read about how to remove the VW car stereo and after a lot of hassle and force, its been removed (the credit card strips didnt work, took a small screwdriver). Anyway, my car audio stuff is arriving tomorrow (comps, HU, amp & sub) and I'm just going through everything step by step as I want to install it all myself.

My question is, how do I remove the door panels to get access to the speakers - do I have to remove them at all? I was trying to wrench off the speaker grill but i ended up cracking it..which shouldn't be a problem because theres new grills with the stuff I ordered. I've noticed two screws on the door panel (one near wing mirror, and one underneath door), once these are unscrewed, do I simply pull out the panel in any direction?

Many thanks,

ok, I will try that in a short while. No, I didn't buy any speaker brackets as I read on these very forums that 17" s will go straight in, is this not correct?

17cm should be direct replacement, you'll have to take the whole door card off. Cant remember where all the screws are but there's a few underneath and you pretty much have to strip all the handles/fingerplate off to reveal more screws, once theyre all out pull the door card out and lift it up over the locking pin.
If you get stuck give us a shout and i'll go have a look at mine.. i've had the doorcards off countless times.

My stuff arrived this morning - I thought it'd be really easy installing the HU but it wasn't. By the time I finished, there wasn't enough daylight time left for me to start on the door panels so I went about doing the amp/sub and wiring it all up instead. I finally (started it all at noon) finished and it was 9pm.

I'm gonna start on the door panels tomorrow. My dad saw me messing around with them and said "Once you get them off, you won't be able to get them on again...", sigh, in that sort of <I don't think you should do that> tone. Anyhow, wish me luck for tomorrow. So far I've gathered that I need to unscrew the whole door panel, and then pull out the parts where there are door handles?

Sure, I'll do that. These forums have helped me sooo much over the last few weeks, I'd love giving something back. I'll try to take pictures if I can, if not, then a detailed step-by-step on how I did it.
