Fan and water problem- related?
« on: 11 April 2005, 15:47 »
my fan doesnt work on my car, well i didnt actually realise until a week or so ago.... the fuse is fine and its all plugged in properly etc, but i just wondered what else it could be? and how much will a new one set me back?

also the car seems to be drinking water, there are no water leaks anywhere and ive replaced every coolant hose under the bonnet cos they were all old and splitting, so replaced the full lot.....

and this may seem like a dumb question... but does the temp thing on my MFA mean oil temp or water temp and what should it be running at on average?

the temp gauge on the clocks doesnt ever go above halfway, but the temp one on the MFA is normally about 95... though i was nailing it on the a1 and it was at 132  i was worried i was gunna blow my head gasket so slowed down  :embarassed:

1. does the fan work on any settings, or are you talking about the rad fan?

2. get a new expansion cap from VAG (nowhere else they are all sh!t fit) old knackered seals allow water/steam to escape from the system

3. MFA temp is your oil temp, and 95 is perfectly normal. id ease off if it hits 120+

4. your dash temp gauge should never go above halfway anyhow

the radiator fan, which other fan is there?

its a brand new expansion tank and cap?

so it wont do my head gasket if its at 120?

didnt know whether you meant the incar heater motor/fan or the rad fan. trying running the fan directly off the battery this will tell you if the motor works or not

also, have you let the car sit and idle to see if the fan comes on, or where you just expecting it to be on cause it was at 95 on the oil temp?

how do i run it off the battery?

ive sat in traffic in idle and the temp gauge has gone over halfway and never come on thats all..... my corsa always used to come on

run a wire from the battery terminal to the fan motor terminal

id let the car sit and idle at your house or something someday and watch the temp guage and see if the fan comes on. just because the corsa did doesnt mean the golf nessecarily will

i suffer this problem with my radiator fan and think its coz of a faulty fan switch located on the radiator.

Get the coolant system leak tested at a garage.

check for a puddle under the engine in the morning.

I've just replaced my radiator fan and it def works, but needle often goes above half on water temp when sitting in traffic.  Oil temp never goes above 95- should I be worried?!
