ABF is probably the best bet in a mk2.
VR and 1.8T are both heavy lumps. However VR's are very cheap to source and can easily be tuned up to 200bhp.

+1 on this the 1.8t is not a light lump by any means.. you also add extra weight by adding FMIC and pipework.. a turbo which aint light. etc etc... the only plus points is if you choose the right lump you can get 240bhp+ with just a recirc valve.. airfilter and a remap which makes it a great engine despite the weight.. also i paid £450 for afully rebuilt ABF engine and box with diesel 4th and 5th.. you couldnt really get a decent secondhand 1.8t for that especially not a BAM/APY one..

Its probably down to budget and taste.
Although the 1.8T is the most tuneable, it is also the most expensive.
The reason why the VR isn't as heavy as people think is its not really a proper V6.

I dont get it on the following grounds:

Its f**king heavy
Its underpowered for a 2.8
Its thirsty, very thirsty
It f**ks the handling
Its has naff all tunability.

If i were doing a conversion it would be 1.8T, no question

That is a typical answer from someone that has clearly had no first had experience from either.
1 - its not that much heavier than a 1.8t lump
2 - its not thirsty if you drive it normally. Can easily get 30+mpg out of it
3 - Myths of it screwing the handling is exactly that. Sure its not going to have a positive effect on the handling, but you certainly can still throw it around corners much like any other engine in a mk2. Unless your on the track and have the surname Hamilton its not going to make a blind bit of noticeable difference. It doesnt suddenly turn into a scaffolding pole round a corner like some people (usually non vr mk2 owners) make it out for you to believe.
4 - can be done on the cheap if you wanted. Sub 600 notes I think i could do a full conversion for now for all the bells and whistles.

Just sticking up for the team ;) haha

Something about "haters"...

Mine handles no worse than my old 8v GTI

As a comparison, I drove an S3 (MY 2000) the other day and it sounded sh!t. Plus there was no bottom end power.

I'd rather have my lazy, torquey, all-bark no-bite VR thank you!

I actually miss my old mk3 VR, i had it chipped, k&n and full jetex exhaust.
Its obviously not as fast as the A8, but it was pretty fast and made a glorious noise

Oh the noise. I'd rather have a 174bhp angry sounding 6cyl lump than a 210bhp wheezy sounding 1.8T

I driven both 150 and 180bhp 1.8T, massively overrated in my opinion.

the S3 i drove last week with 4wd and 210bhp was still uninspiring and sounded like a corsa

all the stuff to fit a 20vt makes it near th same weight as a vr but  vr6'ss sit very high and forward

with the 20vt the intercoolers are forward but low down.  but more inportantly the leans back in the bay and the turbo ect hangs off the back of it
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
