87 GTi 8 valve Fuel Pump
« on: 12 July 2011, 22:15 »
87 8 Valve, been stood for about 3-4 years without being started. Tried to start but no fuel getting through. Starts if I squirt petrol into manifold. Checked the electrical side & have fuel pumping from the tank. I have removed the pump assy from under the car & emptied out all the crappy petrol. Does the pump under the car actually "pump" or does it act as a "switch"?. I have tried it over a battery & it just "clicks" - is it knackered????

Yeah its an actual pump. After standing for so long it could be anything. Fuel over time can block injectors if left as it can in small quantaties dry into a varnish like thing.

Thanks for that, the pump just clicks so guess it's knackered.......
Will also chech & clean the lines/injectors.
Are the pumps the same on all K Jet models?

Your lines will probably be alright but well worth checking the injectors. Not sure if the pump is making an attempt to prime, not sure if that's what you're hearing. Not sure if they're the same but if you end up needing a new one the supplier will know which it is.

I have fuel flow from the lift pump (put a pipe from outlet into a can & switched ign on), the accumulator was full of fuel. Removed the other pump off car but when power is applied it just clicks so guessing it is seized.

Can't find a pump at a realistic price, can I do away with the accumulator then fit a pump & filter. I beleive the MK1 had a set up like this?
I would use a pump of the correct pressure
