Andy and I debated for 30 secs who should start this thread. As I am a tad unpopular and he is much loved, he carried the mantle.
I am a petrolhead and as I don't give a stuff about fuel economy, as don't do many miles, as I don't mind visiting petrol stations where I do most of my prowling, as I rather have the smoothest and quietest engine for my fast enough shopping trolly, as I have a Diesel Mercedes, I prefer the icon which is the GTI which suits my sensibilities.
Nothing wrong with this and nothing wrong in preferring a GTD if that's what floats your boat. But you all know it is NOT a GT with an 'I'. And there is nothing wrong with a bit of snob value.

what he said.....

My 25th Anni was a diesal and whilst it was a great looking car, I missed the feel of a petrol engine - they way you can rev the nutz of it right up to the redline.  In a the diesal I always felt the range of revs where the power was delivered was to short.

My mates used to wind me up all the time as well and say it's not a real GTI because it was an oil burner - this was guys that don't have any love for the GTI badge but their opinion was that if it's not a petrol then it's not a real GTI.

Yeah, but your mates aren't paying your fuel bills and if you want to go round revving the nuts off it you're obviously not going to be a Diesel driver for very long. I don't have any mates so would have nothing to worry about!

You missed an important bit of my post - My 25th Anni was a diesal - was as in past tense, I missed a petrol engine too much.

This talk of petrol stations is also quite funny - Average tank i get 300 miles, around £65 quid.  my friend has got a mondeo 2.2 tdci  £100 to fill it up and he gets around 500 miles. There's not much in that for me to accept having a diesal again.

Anyway, at this moment in time, i don't care about fuel bills and I am happy with my petrol ...

Am I the only one who thinks that vwkev is the only one on here who has a vendetta against the Gtd. Everyone else can see it qualities

Defend your car all you like but take off the blinkers ffs, its a f**kin Diesel and its a wannabe GTI.

I'm not telling any lies, its the truth and sometimes for an owner it hurts. Suck it up.

This. If only everyone could be so forthright and honest

I'll kind of second that - but being a newbie, I am obviously still trying to make a good impression

Although I am in a better positon than most to comment having owned a diesal GTI and a real GTI.

Mod's maybe it's time to move this thread, think it may be in the wrong forum :

Another salient consideration is that I wish to have as little as possible noise and vibration intruding into the cabin as I have spent nearly £2000 (RNS510 not included in this amount) on the sound system and wish to enjoy my Classical music to the fullest.
Every little bit helps.

Wow...fancy that...a car that wants to be a GTI...because the GTI Golf is the bestest car in the whole world, isn't it?
It's a bloody Golf...
That's it. Lets not get ideas above our stations...it's a mass produced hatchback. That's all.

Surely if it wanted to be a GTI, they'd have called it a GTI TDI, not a GTD?

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

But it's not as if the GTI is all that when all is said and done. I think diesel owners bought them because that is what they prefer. Some GTI owners will have bought them for the badge snobbery. Showing off all they could afford. I'm sure there are both GTI and GTD owners on here that also have something far nicer tucked away, but don't wish to shout about it.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Trying to avoid the petrol versus diesel debate, I will give you some genuine feedback about owning a GTD.

I swapped my Ed30 for a GTD. That was a mistake, which I remedied 6 months later when I got rid of it.

Pros-excellent interior (ie standard Mk6), comfortable and a genuine 50mpg (combined).

Cons-poor handling after a GTI, very nose heavy with pronounced understeer eg on roundabouts. No getting away from it, despite 170bhp it is slow (boring) after a GTI. You need to get the 18'' Vancouvers to make it look decent as the standard 17'''s look crap IMHO.
Mine was Carbon Grey and the paint literally fell off the bonnet at the slightest touch. Stone chipping the worst on any car I have owned (though not the GTDs fault as such, but VW paint in general?).

The GTD is typical of 'some' VW products, a triumph of marketing over substance (meaning it's too expensive). Just looking at second hand examples on the VW site the prices are ridiculous. It makes more sense in my opinion to buy the GT TDI and if you want extra performance get it mapped. There are plenty of specced GT TDIs including some with Vancouvers that are cheaper than a poverty spec GTD.

I appreciate that some people have modded their GTDs into great machines, but as standard and after a GTI mine soon left me flat.

Obviously as an 'infrequent' (ok, hardly ever) poster on here I am prepared to be flamed (!!), but having gone through the GTD 'process', I feel well placed to advise others.

I have to admit, over priced, but then again so is every other car these days buy a 2.0 diesel focus it will be over 20K, Astras join the club too, then again Top Gear quoted the Citreon DS3 Racing at 23K why buy one of them when you can have a GTI for a grand more. I know which one keeps its value more.  Madness, all cars are expensive now. What about a new 1M it will cost you over 40K, blimey. Join the RS3 for 40K too and anyone that buys one must have gone mad.  The only people that will be laughing are the government when fuel is twice the price next year. I remember 70p a litre i'm not that old and I am sure others can remember fuel even cheaper than that.

I think this sums is up:

Low Mileage per year = GTI
High Mileage per year = GTD
Faster = GTI (both in standard form)
Looks = GTI or GTD
600 miles to a tank = GTD
20000 miles in one year at 600approx miles to a tank = £2500 in fuel = GTD
20000 miles in one year at 300approx miles to a tank = £5000 in fuel = GTI (After a 4 year saving in fuel I could buy a used mk6 GTI if I wanted one).
Higher Tax = GTI
Lower Tax = GTD
Higher Insurance = GTI
Lower Insurance = GTD
