Pulling the pin on a 1000lb grenade and lobbing it in here.....

Can you compare GTI and GTD a bit like football and Rugby

Both very good games with excellent roots, both require exemplary levels of fitness and strategy, but one game has more finesse and is full of hair dressers who scream foul very often whilst the other which has more of a brute like style sees a better game mentality that a player with half their head missing and one eye hanging out still wishes to play.

One attracts a more common man, the other traditionally more ivory league / upper class / sensible money demographic (Stopping short of Pipe and Slippers here).

61 Plate GTD 5dr, Shadow Blue, 18" Charleston's, Flat Tyre Indicator, Cruise Control, Bi-xenon (With Dynamic Curve), Storage Pack, Winter Pack and RCD 510.

GTD's are ok if you cant afford a GTI.

Thing is, you will always look like the tw4t who cant afford a GTI if you buy one.

GTI mk6, 3dr Manual (Yes Manual! If I wanted a Taxi I'd hail one, not spend £1500 on one), Candy White, Full Leather, Xenons, ACC, 18", RCD510 + Dynaudio, DAB Radio, Winter Pack, Luxury Pack, Fiscon Bluetooth Plus, Golf R LED's.

I agree, I do too many miles, I'd have an R if I could

The R didnt exist when I bought my GTI.

I'm not knocking the GTD, its just that its a bit sh!te to be honest.

If it's fuel economy your after any VW engined diesel will fit the bill but not the 1.6 tdi as I've never heard a good word about them from anyone that owns them, the GTD is the range topping golf diesel but I think the GT TDI offers better value really but the GTD seems more sought after used.

The 2.0 CR TDI is also very quiet, if not the quietest I've ever heard for an oil burner and the engine pulls strong and hard in all gears.

Driven slowly I can get amazing mpg, driven normally with some thrashing I see 50 mpg and if I "go fast" I never see below 40 mpg on the route I drive.

All in all it's like all modern VW's, it's a good car, but not a great car, I'll be going back to a BMW next I think as my last car, a BMW 535d was a great car indeed and I had no faults or problems with it apart from the optional 19" wheels cracking.....

I'd suggest driving a BMW 123d or an BMW Alpina D3 with the 2.0 Bi-turbo diesel engine before buying another VW.

Don't you kind of have to own a GTD to answer the question?

IMO I'd be happy with somebody chipping in who'd at least test driven, which I'm guessing many haven't.

If you are dropping £30k into a bloody Golf, then the £800 difference (or whatever it is) makes no difference...all this bullsh!t about not affording it is just that: bullsh!t.
Oh...I can afford £29200 but not £30000. I don't think so.

If the GTD looked like the GTI in full from the rear, the red grille and the red highlighed interior, and didn't get sadled with fugly wheels I'd have likely have bought one.

I prefer the looks of the GTI, and with the miles I do the running costs don't come into it...but I got used to the torque delivery of my last daily (TDI) so would happily have bought a GTD.

Both are good cars, the GTI being slightly sharper, slightly quicker etc...but it's hardly a quantum leap.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

Yes many haven't as don't want to be proven wrong that they bought the wrong car to soon, shame eh doc they don't know what they are missing. Then there is the fact that Gtd owners paid less for their cars and will probably be worth more than gti's in a few years.......
