Mk4's

Most unreliable of them all

Feel your pain man

Is it just the fact that they don't age well???  Not really had much to do with them, had one at work for a short while and was fine, but then it wasn't that old at the time.

So what are you trying to say...

Were they ever reliable?.. ie, when new were they OK but once they get on a bit they have a terrible mid-life crisis?

Never owned a 1.8t my dad did sold it on 180 odd thousand miles only things changed was clutch and fuel pump.My old Gt-tdi had a problem never broke down though and the fault was caused by human error once done it was 100% relaible.Current mk4 wagon 141,000 miles never misses a beat never broken down so far very relaible.

Right then, I now have 6 weeks off work so the car is going to get some love!

The engine management light/traction control light was due to a faulty MAF

I replaced the MAF with a new Bosch one from GSF last October and it has gone already

Anyway, £100 later and I've got a new one from VW and the car is running a million times better than before

Going to strip the rear brakes down next week, grease them all up & rebuild them to solve the binding, also going to strip the JOMs and fix them.

That'll leave axle bushes and PAS pipe to sort, then a new ARB and lower the front end some more!

Nah, decided to stick with it for the moment! In the middle of buying a house at the moment which means I'll have a drive from September, as soon as I can afford to I'm going to get a VR6 as a project

I must say I'm quite impressed with the vr6, just I still don't like the mk3 look. I think a dome up mk4 looks better then a done up mk3. But as for the engine .....WOW
