Engine swap?? TDI/VR6
« on: 07 July 2011, 22:10 »
Hi guys im new to this forum, thinking about putting a VR6 lump in my mk3 TDI and need some advice. i have a mechanic friend willing to do the job, but he needs to know how much customising will need to be done regarding the swap from petrol to diesel. i want to buy an engine and all ancillaries, so i need to know exactly what i'de need to buy and how easy or difficult it would be for my friend to fit. some of you are probably asking 'why not just buy a regular VR6', its because ive been given the car, and then i wrote it off in the snow, then i managed to fix it, and now i want to put a bit of money into it to turn it into a sleeper as i have it looking just how i want it. hope this message kinda makes sense and i thank you all in advance for any pointers or advice!

Starting with a diesel is a ballache.

You need a doner car really.

Handy thread: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=124485.0

Plus don't forget to check the insurance 1st.

Well you need to change the complet fuel system and lines plus all the brakes etc will need uprating, as I said you need a doner car and really what you would need to do is reshell the VR which to me is pointless.

Makes more sense to sell up and get a VR

Or to spend the money you'd save not swapping the engine on a FMIC, .216 injectors, turbo from a pd150 and a decent chip.

I was looking at TDI's recently and apparently with some mods and a remap you can get em to around VR power anyway and Im guessing they'd be less thirsty too!

sounds good, what is the ease of fitting all this stuff (for a mechanic). the car has got 157k, still runs well and has been fairly well maintained. reckon i could hit the 150 bhp mark with this stuff?

Easy enough to do yourself.

There are some guides to some of the stuff in the Mk3 Maintenance and info stuff.

I think it'd easily get to 150 with that stuff, especially with uprated intake/exhaust.

hmm, sounds tempting, and i suppose u dont see that many tuned mk3 tdi's about.... what do you reckon about putting a second hand pd150 turbo on? recon or new ones cost loads! could be worth a shot with uprated injectors and remap/chip with an exhaust? tempts me but also makes me think why not just leave it standard and get another car (petrol) as a project car! have you tuned yours?
