Restoring a Mk2 - Parts??
« on: 05 July 2011, 20:14 »
Hi, I'm currently the owner of a Mk5 R32 and also a member over on R32OC.

I've had 4 mk2 GTI's over the years but its been a good ten years since my last one. I'm going to be (hopefully) in the position next year to buy another one and keep the R32. But if I do one, I'm going to do it properly. Not to say money will be no object but I'd be planning on sinking more money into it than its probably wise to do and make it a keeper.

The question I have is, where do you source the parts from? The best place I've found so far is VW Heritage but even they only have a selection of parts. Is it a case of constantly scouring eBay or are there other places you can get new parts from.

okay thanks, I may have to rethink my approach. I had intended to buy a semi decent shell for around 1k, strip it to bare metal for respray, have the engine stripped and rebuilt and then replace as much of the rest as possible with new parts on the rebuild process. It may pay me to spend more to buy one in as mint a condition as I can find/afford and start there.

Yeah definitely, mk2's aren't selling for what they should right now, so find the latest, most solid decent one you can. And I wouldn't bare metal it, use the paint already on it as undercoats.. A bodyshop wouldn't bare metal it so I wouldn't bother. You'd be asking for major oxidisation later on down the line.

The way i have done mine is with a doner car. Making 1 good car out of 2. I was lucky that the doner had good panels but bad body. Also lucky it was same year, same colour and spec!

IMO - Buy the best body shell you can - never mind the paint work as if you are like me - it will be getting a respray anyway (Mine was done 18 months ago & now in getting the final bits done - roof & bumpers), then gradually replace all the parts that you need to as & when you find better than what you already have....

I buy most NEW Body or Interior parts via the dealers - (I use a guy who works for TPS & can get up to 30% off)... Or from VW Classic in Germany - I have also used VW Heritage for a brand new MFA stalk as I could not get one from either of my other 2 sources...

It's worth noting that UK dealers have different stock to what VW classic have in Germany - I have tried to order a sunroof seal from Germany and they didn't have any, so tried VW - TPS and they have loads - But as usual the prices from dealers are expensive... £45.60 plus VAT...

Running gear stuff is 10 a penny and as already said there a plenty of OE suppliers out there... so nothing to worry about as such for keeping the old girl going...
