I could probably live with the bumper as it's pretty much like my Mk4. My next door neighbour has the Mk6 GT TDI, too expensive for me!

Yours is fully colour coded though?  :undecided:  The MK5 rear has the full lower part of the bumper in black plastic

Yep; the MK6 GTD is 20K+++ for a 2nd hand one    They do go rather well mind....

Well, yeah I guess I'm thinking of the black valance. I bet after I've looked at all of this I end up with another GTi

No worse than some MK4's these days  :undecided:  Got a mate who has just bought one, albeit for £6500, that's done 92K and that drives like its only done 5K

As with all cars, picking a well maintained one is the key

I'd go test drive both the 170 and GTI though, make sure you're making the right decision.  Fuel prices are only going one way mind.......

Well I want something newer and with lower mileage. I'll have a good look. One thing I've noticed by looking online is some of the GT TDI's go from quite a nice interior with nice equipment all the way to very basic looking with not so nice upholstery, so I'll take my time with this one, but yes I'll try both. So that I don't waste a decent persons time before my mind is made up which way I'm going to swing, I'll try some of the MK5's at the local VW dealers.

Also try a 140 diesel too as they are a fair bit cheaper than the 170 and 99% of them don't have the DPF pipes

Spend wisely on a remap and you'll have a car which is just as quick, if not slightly quicker than a standard 170
