Police with a Speed Gun
« on: 03 July 2011, 13:54 »
Hi all,
Situation is:
Was going up a hill, at about half 9 at night, probably doing just under 40 in a 30. There was a policeman there with a speed gun which i didnt clock being night time. Hands up i was speeding i'm not arguing that, but he didnt come after me or anything. Should i expect anything or did he just not do anything?

This (would) be my first affence should anything happen, would it be a fine and 3 points or would i get the course?

If you think you were speeding, chances are you were.

He called have pulled you over and given you a ticket. This would result in either 3 points & a £60 fine or if you fit the criteria, the chance to go on a Speed Awareness course. This is likely to cost a bit more but you won't get the points.

Alternatively he would have saved the data on a USB stick which will then be processed at the local constabulary ticketing office. You would then get a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) which would pretty much give you the same options as above.

Or he could do nothing as you may have been just under the limit. You said you were doing just under 40. This is on your speedo. So, with say 10% allowance, that could be 33-34 mph. Under the minimum of 10% +1mph to get you a ticket. Start sweating for 2 weeks buddy.

Oh, and yes, the cameras DO work at night.

Are you sure it was a copper? We have groups of residents around here that use the speed guns. Nothing happens apart from if they clock you, you get a letter from the police telling you to slow down

Community Speed Watch. Its not really a bad thing as who is going to take a chance at speeding past a person in high vis with a speed gun hoping its only the vicor? Plus they dont get paid as far as i know. Plus the people that take part in it are the people you will find who complain about speeders. Kills al the birds with one speedgun shaped stone.

As for all of the above, if you didnt get stopped then as said by "Bounce" essentially its very unlikely you will hear anything more but not impossible. Pay more attention to your speedo and enjoy having no points which gives you cheaper overpriced insurance. Ha!

No its a national thing although i believe they have to sign up and volunteer, because of this i guess its more popular in certain areas. Generally they do only sit in 30mph limits in residential areas where people should be extra careful e.g. Schools etc.

Obviously people shouldn't speed at all anywhere but they sit where you could argue the speed limit is to much at certain times of day.

Police are generally fair I've found.

I've been caught speeding (genuine accident), gave advice, let me on my way.

Been overtaken by a Police car when doing three figure speeds and, presumably as it was 1:30, not a car in sight, they didn't care.

But then I don't (well apart from said mistake) speed when it's stupid. IMO, dead at night on the motorway, fair enough aslong as you're sensible, certain national speed limit 60 roads, fair enough.

30/40/50 roads, no. That's also where they always hide with speed guns, which IMO is fair enough.

exactly what i needed to know, thanks very much :)
i know i was speeding but just didnt know if any data was recorded or if the guns just give them the information they need to pull someone over.

Cheers chaps!

i was once driving like a fool when i was about 18 and went past one of these speed guns.. i was doing about 60 in a 40... saw the copper and it was too late to stop so i just carried on.... Police man was on a motorbike of all things but stood at the side of the road (sly bastard)

Needless to say, i dropped the foot some more and took a sharp turn off on to an estate and parked on some random driveway for half hour

Never heard a thing

*this was however  years ago so im guessing technnology for the police will have changed...
