is my carpet going to melt?
« on: 02 July 2011, 13:57 »
Ok so now fitted my new vr6 sebring cat back exhaust. All on great and looks the nutts.
Only problem is I keep smelling a burning rubber smell now. And now I have just noticed the floor inside car is hot and if you touch the metal rail that ataches the front seat to the floor you can't keep your finger on it as its that hot.
I still have the heat sheilds all fitted.
But the one thing about this exhaust is the strait pipe from cat to suitcase on this is and actual long thin box now not just a pipe so its closer to heat sheild.

Do vr6,s have thicker heat sheilds or something?
Is that to hot to be safe?

Nope no leaks. Checked it all and there is no blowing anywhere.

Well the handbrake is roughly above where the cat meets the centre pipe, i presume it drives ok and revs cleanly it is a hot day though, could be you just never noticed it before.

Its behind the hand break right where the centre strait pipe is only mine is now a much larger box now. Car drives fine. Not the weather. Burns your fingers to touch bare metal where seat is bolted to floor there. May loose the box and put strait pipe from vr6 on instead.

Stainless exhausts run hotter, try an extra heatshield if you can

I had the same problem after fitting my stainless exhaust, the area under the handbrake would get really hot (and still does), but it's been 3 years and it's fine, no melting carpets, or rubber, all fine.
