Nothing wrong with the old Audi's, built better than newer models, much more reliable.
Handling on quattro's is good.
Fuel figures are not that bad, the Audi 90 Quattro 20v my dad had was much better than 20mpg and certainly not slow.
Good cars, end of

Good cars, end of

Better described as 'well built' rather than objectively 'good' because they are dull-handling and very solid, but not much fun.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Holiday cottages on the Isle of Wight for 2-10 people? PM me.

Depends how you look at it.
Old Audi's are built to last forever, are super reliable, and quattro models are fun to drive.
Each to their own i guess.

IMHO

UR quattros, old quattros, the turbo version of the 2.3 and the MPG / performance my dad got back in the day when the car was fairly new are not a fair comparison to an old knackered out Audi 80 2.3 E money pit sat up someone's path gathering moss. It's like saying I've found a sierra 2.3 ghia then saying well rs200's were great so this sierra must be great, when they are not.

I drove a number of audi 80's and a few 2.3 E's and audi 90 2.3 E's that were brand new back in the day at Ian Skellys in Liverpool when I had my first and only MK2 GTI and I found them crap back then, so I don't feel they would have got "better with age" nor am I saying all Audi's from that era were crap but as drivers cars I'd say most Audi's back then were a bit crap in the excitement department, infact all the Audi's I've owned I'd never consider as true drivers cars including the two RS4 V8's I've owned. (I did it twice to check I was right the first time )

Oh and adding quattro to make a car handle better doesn't make it a great handling car just a car that doesn't handle well with a bit more grip.

I've also watched the pain of ownership when of a certain member of staff at my office bought his dream car, an Audi S8, that too was a money pit constantly requiring parts of one sort or another, it was crap on fuel and not fast versus the fuel it drank and wasn't exactly exciting apart from the excitement one gets from not knowing if you were going to make the end of a journey or not, which one day it did not along with a fair amount of smoke and knocking.....

I stand by my original post that Audi 80 2.3 E's are crap and that the OP has had a great escape IMHO

Did you ever drive the 90 20v Doc?
That was quite a powerful car for its time and certainly did handle well.
I wouldn't necessarily be interested in an old one thats been sat there gathering moss for years, but i would be interested in one in good nick.
I'd much rather have an old audi than an old golf.
I also own an Audi A8 V8, but its not been a money pit(yet  ).
Every Audi i, or my family have owned have needed very little money spent on it.
They are reliable, which is more than can be said for a golf.
Old golf = fun but unreliable and crap

From time to time you should try adding the following words to some of your posts:

'in my experience'

Because in my experience, from working on the odd late-80s - early 90s Audi and quite a number of Golfs quite the opposite to yours.

The Golfs are very simple, but get into the Audi stuff and it's more complex and they have 'novel' engineering solutions on them which are not simple to fix and can be troublesome.  Pressurised braking system, anyone?
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Everyone should actually say in 'my experience' but rarely do.
I agree with your post, golfs are simple, but IN MY EXPERIENCE  audi's rarely go wrong.
Also from time to time, maybe you could learn to be a bit more polite.
Now wouldn't that be nice
