noisy CV's, re-grease or replace?
« on: 30 June 2011, 15:09 »
Id appreciate any feedback on the lengthy description below!

I took my 8v digi for a spin in the lakes last night, and had a few unpleasant noises from the old girl (one of which turned out to be the bonnet stay coming loose, another is prompting a solid front engine mount as i think its the new manifold knocking). its on new standard engine mounts, with recently replaced bushes and bearings everywhere at the front.

I had a couple of instances on uphill switch back corners, where I was in first gear with a lot of turn on the wheels and a lot of power/load on the go (tight steep junctions). This gave a very nasty grauchy/grinding noise from the front wheels- pretty sure it was from one or more CV joints.

Now, I noted the rotational play in the front axle when the car was jacked up for waxoiling the other day. Holding one wheel still, with the car in gear, I could reciprocate the other wheel such that the valve moved round about one and a half inches or so (i.e. the slack accross the axles).

So im wondering if both of these observations suggest new CV joints would be worthwhile? Or would a regrease help any? The boots look to be in decent nick, but ive not had a thorough prod at them. Ive been doing a few jobs on the car learning as I go, but nothing with driveshafts yet. Also, do vw do the parts, is quality an issue for replacements?

Thanks, Rob

I take it by Axles you mean drive shafts... If they're noisy on full lock at slow speed, they're telling you they're on their way out! You could always undo the boot clips,  inspect, if they are dry (which they shouldn't be) you could pack some grease in there maybe to prolong death but usually if they're making noises they're about dead.

Yes, I mean drive shafts...

Thanks, I'll start putting some pennies aside. Is replacement a difficult job? Ive not read up on it yet, but remember 'ball joint splitters' mentioned in the past and it sounded ominous?!

If youve not got a Haynes, get one.  quite a straight forward job.. dont think you have to touch the balljoints at all.

i figure, if you do a job cheaply, you will only end up doing it twice . . .
