bit of a problem with ECP!!!
« on: 29 June 2011, 17:15 »
where do i start?

cut a long story short:
got a clutch from ECP, turned out to be for a mk4 (double labour charges) this caused the flywheel to keep rubbing the ring on the starter motor, eventual the ring shattered and scortched the gearbox from the inside. had to change the clutch cable and the release bearing.

This was the email that i sent ECP:

Hi, I would like to make an official complaint, as one of you sales assistant gave me the wrong clutch kit for a Golf mk3 GTI (P323VDL) he advised me that it was the correct part according to his system. I took the car to the garage and then mechanic advised me that the part was wrong so I rang euro car parts & they advised me that the part was correct and that it may have been modified by the manufacturer, anyway after having it fitted, the starter motor started to make a screeching noise and eventually made a bang noise, now my starter motor is faulty as it was caught on the flywheel constant. then the mechanic took my gearbox off (double labour) and took the clutch off & took it back to ECP in Nechells Birmingham, he bought 3 out all looked the same, got my refund and went to Andrew Page who gave me the correct clutch & advised me that the clutch ECP sold me was for a mk4 2.0 GTI. This is the 2nd time that I have been given an incorrect part from ECP. My c ar has been off the road for 2weeks due to your mistake, my starter motor does not work correctly and it cost me a lot to get my car back on the road due to the error caused on your system, also I have the invoices from the garage for the double labour costs, I had to call a mobile mechanic out as I broke down in middle of nowhere & then had to call out recovery, the mechanic also advised me that the housing of the gearbox had scorch marks due to the starter motor braking because your system gave the wrong part. I have all the invoices that are required. I am very disappointed in your service and would like compensation due to the errors caused by yourself. If you require any further information please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.

reply:

I am sorry to hear of the problem that you have encountered, in order for me to investigate and resolve this situation would you please forward all relevant invoices to me at your earliest convenience

Kind regards

my reply:

Hi Peter,

I am attaching 5 invoices & 3 pictures (1 x Euro Carparts (CREDIT NOTE), 2 x Mobile-Mech (carried out the work, double labour costs), 1 x TPS (parts required for damage caused by the incorrect clutch) & 1 x GSF (clutch cable). I still need to get a quote for a Starter Motor as thats damaged aswell.

I will attach pictures of the damaged starter motor, and also damage caused to my Gearbox by the incorrect clutch.

Picture of the starter motor: the one on the left is the one that was damaged by the incorrect clutch, it ment to look like the one on the right, (ring broke off/missing on the shaft & also its making a loud screeching noise and has tons of play in the shaft now.

If you require anymore information please get in touch with me.

Thank you

after two weeks of waiting:

my email:

Hi Peter,

I am very dispointed in your serivce. This has been on going for over two weeks and yet the problem has not been solved. How long will you take to have this matter resolved?

Thank you

his reply:

my reply:

LET ME EXPLAIN THIS TO YOU!!
YOU GAVE A USELESS CLUTCH, THE CLUTCH YOU GAVE ME WAS FOR A MK4, MY CAR IS A MK3!
THE MK4 CLUTCH IS DIFFRENT TO THE MK3.
YOU ARE NOT A MECHANIC!!
YOUR A MANAGER AND BECAUSE OF YOU SYSTEM GIVING OUT THE WRONG PART I HAD TO SPLASH OUT MORE MONEY. IF YOUR SYSTEM WAS UP TO DATE THEN THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED!
I CAN EXPLAIN TO YOU.
THE PREASURE PLATE WAS NOT THICK ENOUGH, CAUSING MY FLYWHEEL TO RUN THE STARTER MOTOR CONSTANT.
THE PART NUMBERS ARE THERE FOR A REASON SO YOU DONT INSTALL THE INCORRECT PART. TO YOU IT MEANS NOTHING.
MY CAR WAS OFF THE ROAD FOR TWO WEEKS DUE TO YOUR INCOMPETENCE!
NOW I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR 3-4 WEEKS FOR YOU TO SAY THAT TO ME?
IF YOU WANT I WILL POP INTO YOUR STORE AND SHOW YOU THE DAMAGE TO MY STARTER MOTOR AND WHATELSE.
I WILL BE GETTING IN TOUCH WITH THE HEAD OFFICE. I AM NOT HAPPY WITH YOUR ANSWER! YOU ARE JUST AVOIDING TO PAY THE LABOUR COSTS.

my 2nd reply:

The clutch itself is diffrent. The preasure plate it thinner (moves the flywheel back slightly), flywheel will then catch the stater motor. make sense?

this guy realy starting to fiddle with my nerves. i might end up taing th starter motor and pics of the gearbox and other invoices and having a personal word with him.

p.s pic of the damaged starter motor (ring missing and tons of play in it.

Does a mk4 clutch actually fit a mk3 then?
Would the mechanic not notice it was not right?

it fitted but when we started the car, the starter motor was stuck onto the flywheel (that screeching noise). the mechanic advised me of the clutch kit being wrong so i rang ECP, who said that the part was the correct one and that it might have been modified, anyway i lost all gears within a week and had to get someone out and then have the car recovered back to the garage.

Unfortunately this a very frequent occurance when dealing with ECP. Been loads of threads on here about incorrect parts supplied by them, and because of this, I wont go near them. Obviously no consolation to you now though mate, and I hope you get the matter sorted and resolved to your satisfaction.

TBH it looks like a combination of wrong part and the mechanics fault. Looks like he damaged the starter motor to me.

But yes you are right ECP gave me the wrong part 3 times but they gave me a huge discount as compensation.

na the mechanic didnt damage anything! i know he didnt as if he did he wouldav told me and sorted the part out himself. also when we replaced it with a 2nd hand starter it did the same thing. other thing is
F*CK their discount, as far as im concerned they can stick that discount where the sun dont shine!

Theyve given you a complete refund for your clutch, what else do you expect them to do except an apology and maybe discount in the future as a goodwill gesture?

If the part was supplied in error then they should at least be liable for the extra labour costs.
