Steering column bolts....
« on: 27 June 2011, 22:55 »
Jetta got knicked...

got it back...

The steering lock has been overcome by force...

The steering column shroud is all bent....

I'm thinking that rather than bending it back I should replace it...

DAMN! Sheer bolts.....

I'm a bit of a noob....

Will an easyout sort this? do I need a particular size? Anything to look out for in order to do this RIGHT?

Erm.... anyone in Glasgow got experience of this?

Am I right in thinking the shear bolts have a head as such, in which case try mole grips.  :lipsrsealed:

Yeah they have a wee bit of a head. I'll give that a try when the light returns..

Fingers crossed!

take a small chisel or dot punch and hold it on the edge of the head and give it a good rap with a hammer so that you force it anti clock wise

i was dreading doing mine but it works a treat , couple of decent blows and the undo with pliers

You don't need to undo the two sheer bolts, just take the column out complete and swap either the inner bar or just the ignition part onto a new/secondhand column. Pretty easy job, I had to do the same on my Jetta as someone had tried to break the steering lock - I was lucky though as they failed.
