Cylinder Head off, what else to do?
« on: 26 June 2011, 20:47 »
Hello,

I've taken off my 8v golf (digi) cylinder head to be restored and ported, new valves etc etc. Whilst its off the car, what else is worth renewing/servicing on the engine? The car's done 170k but the engine was sound before I took the head off - long story featuring a water pump, and a bloody snapped bolt!  The engine is still in the car.

My head is coming off this week for Rebuild, I ordered myself a stainless manifold as don't fancy putting one on with the head still on. If u search for hottuning and say your on this forum he will do u one at a good price :)

Might as well replace the cam belt i guess as you'll have to re-time everything anyway. And clean any gunk from the top of the piston heads.

If there is 'gunk' on the pistons you have serious problems  :lipsrsealed:

Replace gunk with soot then. Was told this was a normal by product of detonation.

Cheers guys, was toying with the idea of uprated cam and you've twisted my arm. The whole engine bay needs painting so no reason to leave the rusty old block out.  Once its done it'll look nicer than the bodywork   Will definately check the bores.  Can I get at the big end bearing from here?  Whilst its in bits i may as well be thorough.

You need an ABF if you are going to be thorough

Actually after paying to have the head reconditioned, buying a fast road cam and new timing belt and tensioner, all for about 10 more horses, I'd probably be spending the same on an ABF setup.  The dashboard is in bits as well.  Bloody tempting...
