How to get back to standard map
« on: 26 June 2011, 16:42 »
I've recently bought a 2003 Passat B5.5 1.9 TDI with the 130ps AVF engine.

The previous owner had the car mapped by GIAC to a reputed 150 (ish) bhp. Having had 2 standard Sport 130's before, it certainly feels about right for a power output of 150+ bhp.

However, i'd like to get the car back to standard (long story). I went to my local VW main stealer who said they they couldn't do it, but could "supply and fit a new ECU for you".... er... no thanks. By the way, I can't take it back to GIAC because I have no paperwork for the map and the previous owner got it done through the back door as he was doing some work with GIAC at the time.

Surely it must be possible to flash the map back to standard using a dealer's 5052 machine? I've heard stories of people with remapped cars taking them into dealers for work and them coming back minus the remap because the dealer has upgraded the car to the latest software.

Any help appreciated!

You can ask your local remapper to do it if he has an original file for your car. I'd be tempted to ask GIAC for a copy of your original file as they should have a copy of it from when they mapped your car.

FYI it's always best to have the original file from your own car rather than a tuners closest match.

Where are you located?

Located near Banbury.

Can't go back to GIAC as the remap was done through the back door with no paperwork.

Have made contact with a VAG specialist in Brackley (APS) who say they can do the job but not sure on price yet.

Still find it hard to believe that the main stealers can't do it!

Its more of a case that they can't be bothered; at least not without robbing you blind

That's correct as the software controls various parameters including some optional factory upgrades which are specific to certain vehicles.  Having said that the B5 Passat 1.9 PD130 is very common to tune and I'm if sure if Nick or Craig don't have it, I'll have the stock setting file for it.
