Id say an ignition timing issue. Get a timing light on there.
Those carbs are a nightmare unless you know wot you are doing aswell.
There is a pierburg FAQ somewhere on here, could be worth a look

thanks that was my first thought although its running fine starts first time plenty of power its just when I come to turn it off

yeah been reading the FAQ about the carb, I'm reluctant to touch it as its running well. looking in the haynes manual it says something about the pre heater and temp senders red and grey in a drivers case I think they are blue and white on a GTI. because the car does come up to temp really fast too fast I think I only get to the bottom of the road  thinking maybe should start with replacing these?

Any other ideas?

Ian

Hi
This can also be due to the timing being out.

The red and grey things you mention are thermoswitches, not temperature senders.  They switch off the inlet mani heater (hedgehog) and autochoke electrical heater at about 55C and 35C coolant temperature, respectively. Ignore these for now, they won't be relevant.
