K&N 57i Kit on a MK 16v - Odd things afoot....?
« on: 07 April 2005, 15:36 »
So I just bought and fitted the 57i kit to my valver and noticed a few odd things, was wondering if any of you had similar experiences...

First off, the kit comes with a bent tube for re-attaching the breather to the back of the filter, but you don't have to remove any breather so there's a spare hole in the filter!  I just blanked it with a big bolt and spring washer and locked nuts...   Anyone have this kit and noticed this?  Have I done something wrong?

Next up, when I am out on the road, or even revving in neutral, full open throttle, above 4k revs, there's a weird whistling noise, rather like a turbo spinning up.  No idea why, haven't got anyone with me to watch it and see where it comes from - might get a mate to look alter while I rev it...anyone seen/heard this?

Lastly, it's a great kit.  Apart from the above which are not show-stoppers, it sounds great, there's a definite improvement in throttle response and it feels more urgent when you drop a cog and blast it for overtaking.  From standstill it's only slightly sharper.

After a good blip around some back roads and then through town, I open the bonnet and felt the K&N filter itself - nice and cool, cold in fact, and so was the cold air feed pipe which I had carefully positioned to get a good dose of cold air from the lower grille, so I know it's not choking on hot air.  I have also removed the hot air feed from the exhaust manifold, as it was useless flopping abou once the airbox was gone, and who needs hot air in our climate?

So to sum up - I love it.  I've only ever used K&N kits and have never been let down.  Sounds great, goes well, and even cruising on a m-way seems more effortless now - less throttle seems to be needed to keep a speed constant, so it *should* mean a slight improvement in MPG, if I can stop flooring it, that is!  just puzzled by the two odd things above though......
Cheers

Colin.

could that "hole" have been for the MAF sensor?

I've just got off the phone with a very helpful bloke from K&N 's R&D unit who has come across this before.  It appears that SOME MKIII 16v 's had different breather systems to the norm - maybe mine is so early a model or something.  The majority apparently have the extra breather going into the airbox  -  mine does not.

The chap said that short of returning the kit and doing without, blanking it securely is the correct way to work around it.

There's no MAF btw, at least none I had to remove to fit the kit.

The noise is apparently air at high speeds whistling past the breathers I do have which are a lot further towards the throttle and it's just the way it is.  As it only happens at full throttle above 4k revs, shouldn't be a problem.  He doesn't know that's how I drive ...... :)

Anyhoo, I'm happier that it's a known thing and not just me.

I'm off to RAAAR it some more!
Cheers

Haha, enjoy ur motoring, hope you've plenty of money for Shell Optimax fuel, cos driving at over 4000 revs will soon drain the juice!!!!

Still what else were Golf Gti's built for!!!

So I'm going to alter my sig to say "94 Valver TURBO'ED"....

Spidey is really cool, camp as christmas, but it's oddly mesmerising, isn't it?

Well, a mate from the corrado world, who owns one on the HOTTEST VR6's I've seen, was out in it last night and COULD NOT BELIEVE the difference it has made.  I guess it's just a subjective thing.  My brothers MK3 8v has one and it's not as inpressive, but then he's missing 8 valves and abiut 35 HP......!

turbo'd?

an induction kit is like sticking a peg and playing card on a bike to make it sound like a motorbike.. its not 'that' special.. just makes a cool noise..
