Oil on spark plugs
« on: 20 June 2011, 17:25 »
Hi guys I have a 8v pb, she done 140k She always been bit smokey from exhaust and used bit of oil not nothing serious,

The car currently does not start every time I go to start the car it floods the spark plugs with oil :(

I Guessing this is valve stem seals, but could poss be piston rings

Is there any way of testing if it's valve stems of rings while heads still on?

Wet and dry compression tests. Do a normal dry test, and record all results. Then add oil to each cyl via spark plug hole and repeat tests, again recording. If there is a marked difference between wet and dry then its your rings that are worn/leaking more

I would say your looking at valve stem seals but as above do a wet / dry compression test.

Heads gonna come off and have a clean up and put new valve stems on, prob test rings while head is off by putting oil on pistons and seeing if it soaks through or not :)

putting oil in the cyls won't tell you if the rings are ok or not
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

i assume the oil will be changed at the same time,so why not use petrol instead of oil.its thinner so will soak through faster.

Its possible to change the stem seals with the head in situe, so would be an inexpensive first step. Also the stem seals are more prone to wearing out before the rings, so I would suspect they are the culprit...

if you just put oil in the cyls  to see if it soacks down through you'll be waiting a long time.

all the VW's have gone bar 1.
