Mk5 Gti stage 1 remap v Mk6 Gti????
« on: 20 June 2011, 13:08 »
Hi guys,

I have a mk5 Gti with a stage 1 remap pulling 247bhp and when pulling out of my village yesterday I spied a black mk6 Gti and eargerly followed him. He then pulled on to a private test track which enabled us to accelerate hard and compare our cars. The track was up steep incline, I chased him hard and the mk6 was pulling well, he was not going anywhere and i pulled a little on him on the mid range but when we both hit the top end gears and revs we were both going exactly the same speed.

I am wondering if the mk6 Gti had been remapped or its just that a standard mk6 is quick? Surely not!!!

Anyone got any experience of comparing these cars for power.

Thanks

I'm so glad you weren't racing on public roads.

The mk6 isn't really any quicker than a standard mk5, so you've got a problem.

I've owned a mk5 and mk6 GTI and where I haven't actually raced anyone on a 'private road' I have spent enough time with both cars to note that they aren't miles apart in the performance stakes.

Once remapped though the mk6 does seem to drive a little more sharply than the mk5 similarly modified. Not masses in it but a bit.

The mk6 is slightly better on fuel too.

As a previous mk5 owner i would agree with the above.
Magazine reviews also show similar time with only around 0.3 to 60 difference and around 1 second to a 100 difference with standard cars.
So either hes a good driver, is better at changing gear (both DSG or both manual), extra weight in your car etc etc.
The extra a chipped 5 over a standard 6 is only around 2 seconds to 100 which you could easy loose by many factors.
Taking into account you did not start from a standing start theres just too many factors to consider but i would blaim the driver.

thanks for the replies guys and for applauding my driving skills. i have had the car remapped only 2 weeks and from a standing start it feels rapid, much quicker than in standard form. Also the torque is imense but i take onboard your comments about road conditions and difference in drivers when i was trying to compare. also the mk6 i was up against could have had dsg or simply it could have been remapped like mine.

One thing i have noticed about the remap is that the speed and power of the car depends on the way the turbo spools up. Anyway it dont matter cos the car feels like a rocket over standard and everyone who has gone in it can really feel the difference with the remap.

Remaps are a must for any mk5 gti owner!

If he has DSG, then you would need more horsepower to compensate, whilst your trying to keep traction and change gear, he's busy using his index finger

Id have thought a mapped MK5 would fairly easily out do a standard Mk6. The way you have described sounds as if you were completely level, my guess is a mapped MK6.

Well I will have a real test this weekend because I am meeting my mate who has a mk4 R32 and the last time we went on to the private test track we were neck and neck. no difference at all. He has since gained a carbonio but I have had the remap so I will be able to compare the power difference.

Thanks again for all the comments!

A carbonio makes zero difference in performance

it's just eye candy and offers no performance gains.

Yeah, to be honest he has already told me it seems to make naff all difference to the power but gives a decent induction roar.
