My mate has a 2ltr compact and I've consistently beaten monstered him with an elderly 16v mk2 :smug:

Although this will most probably change when he finishes his E30 project...

I'd keep the mk4 personally.

As many say, keep the Golf. A 3 series compact is just a poor man's thingy extension. Wreaks of fail.
