Mk2 power steering dropping revs!
« on: 16 June 2011, 19:33 »
Hi I recently replaced the power steering pump and now when I turn the wheel it really drops the revs, if you turn it too quick the engine stalls! The only thing i can think of is that i knakerd the hose gland when refitting so maybe it's drawing air through which is making the pump struggle?

I'm also soaking the isv as we speak, just as a precaution (I thought maybe it wasn't quick enough to deal with the extra load at idle)

Please help as I've got an Mot tomorow and really want to get it sorted! Thanks

Remove the cap, then turn the steering wheel lock to lock 10 tens slowly that will bleed the system.

If after that then check and see if the belt is too tight.

I have gone lock to lock loads of times, I'll give it another go though. Also I'm pretty sure the belt isn't too tight, there is a bit of play in it, how loose should it be?do you have any other ideas?

Check the idle speed, if too low that will not be helping.

It's idling at around 1000 but I have had some idling issues. It was idling to high so I had to fiddle with the idle control screw to get it idling that low.

Could be your idle valve sticking and then letting the revs drop when it releases

I replaced the pump yesterday just incase it was faulty and it hasn't solved the problem! Has anyone experienced this problem before? I really have run out of ideas :(
