Oil Viscosity
« on: 05 April 2005, 21:33 »
I have got the chance of buying some cheap Castrol RS Fully Stnthetic Oil. Only trouble is it is 0W-40W, is this too thin to put in 1.8T motor?
I put some in an older motor I once had,  it rattled like a hell and developed oil leaks.

I wouldn't comprimise on the quality of your oil. For what you save, you run such a risk of expensive damage longterm. Personally I always stick with the VW recommendation.

buying the sheap stiff in the long run aint ever good!  you make think, sh!t thats a weee bit expensive, but compare it to repairs and its a lot different.

think you answered your own question there really.  if it did that to an old engine, you dont want it doing it to a new engine!

Thanks for the replies.

The oil I can get cheap is top quality fully synthetic stuff which is the same quality as Mobil1. It normally retails at close to £40.00 for 4 litres. The thing that I am unsure about is the oil thickness or Viscosity rating.

0w-40w is quite thin and is designed for high tec modern engines. I was wondering if it was Ok for the 1.8T motor. The only reason a previous older engine rattled and leaked was because the oil was just too thin and older motors which have bigger clerances require thicker oil the same as high mileage motors.

if its the quality you say it is, buy some.  but find out from a garage or somewhere like a garage, and get a professionall opinion on what oil your engine should use. whats it say in the handbook???

I always thought that you'd use loads of the stuff if it's that thin. As Rich says, don't compromise on oil, use what VW recommend even if it's their own Quantum Syntra gold. I always use Quantum syntra silver from VW in mine and it seems good to me, I use a bit between oil changes and services so have to top ot up a little so I can only guess at how much of the thinner stuff you'd use.
......now officially dubless.

The 0w-40 will be fine in the 1.8t, believe me this is a modern engine and would be happy on 0w-40/5w-40.

All the 0w is going to do is give you better cold start protection due to the low cold crank viscosity.

In your hand book it will give you a list of codes for the oil for your car, it will look a  little like VW505.00 and if the same code is on the back of the oil can then it has been approved by VAG.

Cheers

Bragsey if i was you just use VW Quantum silver its only £14 a gallon and according to my local specialist is the best oil for Mk3&4 petrol engines.
