The other option is get hold of a Vortex ratchet set. Big meaty sockets with holes in the centre, and ratchets to go with them. (Halfords sell them)

I've used mine multiple times on various things and they are fantastic, plus you can usually crack it off using the ratchet spanner instead of using the allen key.

Do the sockets fit in the gap on the cup, or are they too meaty?
I think i needed something quite thin walled to get in there.

i managed mine with a right sturdy 24 spanner allen key and a huge pole bout 2m long on the end of the allen key for a bit of leverage!

If i remember right, a spark plug socket works at a treat on this, one with flats for a spanner to engage.
Then use an allen key through the middle, you can get the laser tool with a big handle.
I wouldn't recommend using air tools on shock absorbers, you can damage the seals.
Battery powered wrench would be fine.

These guys supply VAG and do sockets and keys specific to this operation, i swear by them for tools
