Was just looking at old photos and realised the suggested tyre pressues in the fuel flap are different between mk5 GTI and mk6 GTI.

2005 Mk5 GTI 5 door, 17" wheels
half load 2.4/2.4 bar = 35psi
full load 2.6/3.0 bar = 38 & 44psi

2010 Mk6 GTI 5 door, 17" wheels
half load 2.6/2.6 bar = 38psi
full load 2.8/3.0 bar = 41 & 44psi

 :undecided:

IIRC the suggested tyre pressures were the same for 17s or 18s on the mk5.
IIRC the same pressures applies to the mk6 with 17s or 18s.

So im confused as the EA888 engine was suppose to be much lighter than the EA113.
Has the rest of the car put on weight or is there other reasons?

Whats your thoughts?  :undecided:

According to a Mk5 brochure I have here, you're right. The unladen weight of the Mk6 is 10kg lower than the Mk5 but the gross vehicle weight went up - though I think that would only affect the full load tyre pressure.

The front axle load limit went up 10kg - could that explain it? Doesn't sound like much of a difference to me.

Or could it be down to something like chassis engineer/test driver fine tuning of the chassis, or even choice of OEM tyre manufacturer?

I think maybe they had to bring the gross vehicle weight up due to the amount of weight the country is putting on....... :P

Interesting,

MK6 = 1318kg
MK5 = 1328kg

My reason would be to improve the official fuel economy figures.
Now = 2011 MK6 GTI - Reflex Silver
Past = 2006 MK5 GTI - Tornado Red and Solid Black

Could be, i remember reading threads on the mk5 forums a few years back saying if the pressures were abit higher mpg improved.

I have dropped mine down to 35psi and the ride is so much better imo on my daily commuter roads. Far less pattery/jittery in 30/city zones.
I will monitor the MPG and tyres to see if they suffer.

All those overweight drivers need to remap their cars to get decent mpg and acceleration.  :tongue:

I am also going to levy a Fat Tax on my passangers.  :evil:

Fat Tax, Love it!

What about getting Fatty's to lie down in the back, so as to assist in keeping the center of gravity low and keep it between the two axles.

an old thread revived

no pressures for a mk6 GTI but all the other mk6's are 33.5psi

seems strange as a 2.0tdi will be heavier than a gti so 38psi is well over the top surely

http://www.conti-online.com/generator/www/uk/en/continental/automobile/general/downloadarea/download/air-pressure-2010-en.pdf

also the mk5 is 34.8psi and thats pretty much the same weight as a mk6.

this 38psi nonsense is just to get mpg up and co2 down I'm sure.

i run 36psi front and back as a compromise.

our focus which is heavier than the gold but runs 31psi front 33psi rear and it feels sharper steering than the GTI.. weird as i would expect more pressure to mean more steering response but less grip.. :undecided:.

That's really surprised me, thought it was much heavier than that, good news :cool:

the ea888 is way lighter than the older ea113 and the mk6 is not as well made :grin:
