Getting stripe to stick!
« on: 10 June 2011, 17:47 »
So i bought 6mm red stripe to smarten the old girl's bumpers up a bit, and ive used the hairdryer technique all the way round the car to good effect and its worked very well... Apart from the rear bumper!
Ive heated and heated and re-tried again and again but for some reason it just wont bond. I read on here somewhere that it may not be clean enough, so ive washed it a couple of times and even tried using a bit of white spirit to get any grease off but it still wont work. (Although it has "greyed up" the bumper slightly, maybe should have thought that one through lol)

Anyone got any tips to help?

PS how long does it usually stay on for? And can I take my car through car washes still?

Mine sorta did the same. Half on the back bumper came away, and all the edges are a little flappy but that may be due to fingers!. I did the same thing with cleaning and white spirit. The front is still on though after about 4 months and doesnt show any signs of coming off.
If you have enough left, just give it a wipe with a clean lint free cloth, and try it without heating it up. Not sure what else to suggest tbh.

Thinners the bumper off, get the bumper hot with a hair dryer or a heat gun if you're careful then apply slowly.

Where all my moneys went.

Yeah only really half on mine didnt stick, the bits of the bumper that wrap around to the quaterpanels were fine, just on the back it didnt bond whatsoever.
Did you manage to get yours to stick in the end then? Im considering using a dab or two of superglue...

Thinners? Like paint thinners you mean? I tried white spirit, thats basically the same innit?

Don't use thinners, meths will do less damage to the bumper.

I did think about this but with all the masking and prep, it was much easier just to stick it on. I'm gonna try having a proper scrub at the bumper today, I'll update later if anyone's interested. And even if you're not!

Fair enough but it can damage plastic.
