A common fault that a few people have had including myself is a leaking coolant flange which causes you to lose coolant.

There have been a number of people having issues with the air compressor on the A/C which is expensive to fix.

Coilpacks, there has been a recall by VW

Early models GTIs had very poor DV valves, easy upgrade to a newer version.

Early models also had steering rack issues (expensive)

Due to the nature of the seat design the bolster can wear over time.

If you take it to a dealer (which I wouldn't suggest, Id say find a good local(ish) VAG dealer and get friendly with them) and the aircon compressor is found to be at fault they will recommend you replace that and the condenser and will want about £1400.

As I said, not cheap.

No idea what cost would be from an indy garage, thats dealer price.

Sensor in coolant bottle can go causing the warning light to go off every time you start the car. Requires a new coolant expansion vessel.

Rear wiper motor can develop fault where it goes off on it's own when you start car. Requires a new one.

Just hit 70k miles in my 05 GTI, engine still feels sharp as the day I got it.  Coil packs, belts & water pump all changed.  Divertor valve also replaced.  Will be selling soon, what to get next though?
