Couple of problems
« on: 11 September 2003, 11:02 »
Hi,

I just bought a Mk2 8v GTi, and I'm very happy with it apart from a couple of things:

1) Theres a bit of play in the steering (non PAS)
2) The gears crunch sometimes

Any ideas...?

Cheers

Neil

If the gears crunch in 2nd,then its probably the sinchro mesh, you can live with it or get a new box.If your lucky it may be the pressure plate on the clutch.
The play in the steering sounds like the 'rack'.

I've never tried it but have a look at this with regards to the gearbox:

Try changing your gearbox oil for castrol syntrax, it works a treat. As for your steering, it will be play in the rack or balljoints. Get the car on stands and lever all the balljoints to test for play. Get someone to turn to steering from lock to lock while you are under the car, if there is play in the rack you can usually hear like a rattling noise.

I take it I'll need a new rack if theres play in it.  Are these easy to fit?

New rack will be a difficult job, could still be excessively worn balljoints.

You can adjust out slight play in a steering rack as long as its not completely knackered, Look where the steering coloumn meets the rack and you'll see on the rack a plate with two securing screws and a screw in the middle, twist the screw in the middle in till you feel it starting to bind then wind it back very slightly.
