Have I been syphoned? and weird buzzing noises
« on: 08 June 2011, 17:38 »
I was just going into the red last night in my golf 1.4 CL so I put £10 in just until Friday when I get paid and as usual reset the trip meter to see how many miles I could get out of it. So far I have done 7 miles and when I started the car up this morning I was at the top of the red again?! Down from about a quater of a tank!  :undecided:  This is obviously wrong because normally I can do about 85 miles on £15!

I stopped on various flat roads to check that it wasn't a slope causing the fuel to look lower than it was and it was no different at all!

Any suggestions for this? I can't really afford to put any more petrol in until Friday :p so I will try that then and see if the gauge increases.

Secondly, I replaced a fuse in the car for the interior lights and dash. Ever since I did this when I unlock my car or turn off the ignition after driving it I get a buzzing noise for around 10 seconds which is coming from a box underneath the drivers side rear light. Is this normal?  :undecided: I thought it was the rear window washer pump but I dont think my car even has one because it's never worked :p

They have notoriously poorly designed fuel tanks/senders so it is more likely a faulty sender than having being siphoned. Do you not have a locking filler cap?

Just drive it until it conks out

If it doesn't increase when I top it up I'll take a look at the sender unit :) Thanks Is it easy to do and cheap? ^_^ No my car never had one and I've been meaning to buy one but just kept thinking "It'll never happen to me".

That was my plan but I don't want to run out in an awkward place like at traffic lights xD

You can't syphon fuel from a Mk3, they have a security thing in the filler neck.

The box under your rear light is the central locking pump. Common problem and its probably on its way out. Changing the fuse may just have been coincidence. You can pick up used pumps for sod all from a scrappy or ebay.
Oh and agree, its more likely just your sender.

Just an update to this thread, I took the fuse 21 out and back in again and its fixed my fuel gauge! Weird?

I thought it was the central locking pump.. I didn't think my car even had central locking? It's never worked!  :undecided: Did all Golf's come with it? Mine's a 1.4 CL.

Dunno tbh. Well if you can hear it now, at least you know you have power to it. Have a look and make sure all the pipes are connected and intact, and if its still not working just source a new pump. Nice little unexpected addition then.

Yeah I'll have a look at the pipes, shall I just check the pipes connected to the pump or is there other places to look :p Will this pump work on my car if I have no luck?

Yeah that pump should be fine. Trace all your pipes from the pump to the door cards/boot lock and all inbetween. May have become disconnected at the solenoid in one of the doors, or at a connector piece somewhere along the line, or broken where the loom enters the doors as it gets more movement there obviously.

C / l pumps are known for failure however if it is running on you may have an air leak somewhere.
