noisey reverse gear HELP HELP HELP

Just got a mk 3 golf gti and the reverse gear is really noisy and pops out unless i take it realy slow anyone know what this is and how hard it is to fix ???

could be clutch, does the car jolt when you put it in reverse?

not really if i rev the engine too much or am going backwards onto the drive (wherever there is a small incline) then it will 'pop' out of reverse and into netrual :-)

You are going to need another gearbox.

Common GTI fault.Chipped gear on reverse idler makes the noise.Another box is the only remedy although the linkage may be the cause of the popping out of gear.If you can cure that you could maybe live with the noise unless you have an addiction for driving everywhere in reverse ?!!!  :laugh:

Get a new linkage kit, and check your gear oil before panicking. Just replaced my engine, and car has been off the road with the gearbox in my shed for about 2 months. Gearbox was fine before, but now it keeps popping out too. I have replaced with new linkage kit, and am renew my gear oil. Whist in the shed, it tipped over and a little spilt out, I'm hoping this will solve it. Would suggest doing the same before forking out on a new gearbox.
