Could someone explain the MFA to me please?
« on: 04 April 2005, 15:10 »
Hello all,

I finally got my MFA working a couple of weeks ago, and would like to understand exactly what it is telling me!

on the washer stalk, there is a switch with 2 positions on it. labelled 1 & 2. by pushing the switch further right, it reset's the MFA reading for position 2. Position 1 is stored though, and I can't seem to reset it?

Is the reading supposed to be an average for the whole journey?

I've noticed that in the morning, the readings start from 0 (distance, and average mph), but if i switch the car off for a bit, and start it again, the readings are stored from the last journey? how long do I have to leave the car switched off for, for it to reset completely?

Could someone explain this to me? I know it isn't going to be very accurate, but I'd still like to know what its doing.

Cheers!

Chris.

To reset position 1 push the switch right over to the left as you do to the right for resetting 2.
Setting 1 stores the information and just keeps clocking it up until you reset it.
Setting 2 is the setting which only stores information for individual journeys, I think the memory of setting 2 is cleared about two hours after the ignition is switched off.

The most handy thing about the MFA is being able to keep any eye on your oil temp, my MFA lives on that setting.

1 is for the current journey within 30mins or so i think. to reset it push it left and hold

2 is for all journies until you reset

I was pretty sure that it was position 1 that I couldn't reset. I will try it again later on!

What oil temp is normal? I haven't got a clue what mine runs at! The water temp guage is pretty high.

Oil temp depends on whether it's an 8 or 16v as 16v's tend to run a little bit hotter.
Typically it should be somewhere in the range of 90-110
My 16v runs at about 100 when driving normally and about 108 if I'm driving enthusiastically on the motorway.

Cheers for the replies.

its an 86 8v.

I recently changed the coolant, flushed, and reverse flushed the coolant system, and fitted a new thermostat.

I will also be fitting a new fan switch soon, as mine only switches the fan on at the higher speed, so the engine gets quite warm before the fan comes on.

I understand the fan should be switched onto its low speed when the water temp gets about half way ish? mine currently gets to about 3/4 high, then the fan cuts in.

I will check my oil temp on the way home. Hopefully everything will be ok.

My 8v runs at about 80 - 90 when driven sensibly and then up into the high 90's when I'm giving it some beans.

Mine is also a 8v and runs dead on 92 when warmed up and normal running.

Had it up to 100 on the way to the meet yesterday but that's the hottest I've had it.

My old 8v got up to 110 and ran fine. Others I've heard on valvers have had them in the mid 130s

mine never went higher than 92 yesterday :S but its still pretty cool out there in the summer i seen it hit 112 when i been thrashing it.

also to reset the 1 & 2 position on the mfa it wont reset in all modes for sure it resets on journey time but on average mph mine doesnt reset it gets a little confused says 0 then says the average speed again could be just my mfa :S bit like my golf past its prime lol
