golf mk2 gti HELP !!!!

hi there just fitted a 1.8 pb digifant gti engine into my golf,engine had died in my gti,anyways took it out today,died a few times had to mess around with live terminal on battery then eventually it would crank no probs,but that only happened when i turned it off,but on my way home it died when i pulled up at some lights,and same happened again,also when i turn my ignition on my batt light doesnt come on,can anyone shine any light on my problems please,any help would be very helpful

That battery light needs to come on with ignition and go off upon starting. There's a small blue wire that runs from alternator to near battery, then upto the clocks. If that has a break in it, the light won't come on, and the battery won't charge. Ideally you should trace it all the way and prove its continuity, but for now if you just tie it to earth somewhere it should allow charging, it just won't give you the light to say its playing up. You can trace it at a later date, putting it to earth for now will see you alright for a temp measure
