Poor fuel economy - idea's please
« on: 04 June 2011, 17:08 »
Hi all, i've owned my mk3 2.0 8v for couple months now.
It's my first vw and i love it, but it has a problem.
Since owning it, i've noticed it drinks far way too much petrol. I can actually watch the needle move down as i drive it.
I had to put £20 worth in yesterday as it was in the red, even though i stuck £30 in it last saturday, and i hadnt driven it alot. Roughly 55 miles i had covered on the £30 i had put in.

Can anyone please shed some light and maybe point me in the right direction as to what to check etc.

Many thanks

Kelly.

If that is shortish runs then it is about right.

Might be worth fitting a new temp sender in anycase.

could be less than 55 miles.
yeah thats on normal town driving, stop/start.
doesnt seem right mind, my last car ran better on fuel and thats with it not running right and that was a 2.0

55m on £30 is roughly 10m per gallon. You have some problems!!!!!!

I put shell v-power in mine which is £1.41 a litre at the min and £30 round town hard driving will see at least 140 miles if i slow down I can see better figures I would say about 200.I changed the temp sensor on mine and ive had my tyres filled with nitrogen ent got a clue if it makes any difference but never cost me so why not..

I've got a 16v and it's just done bang on 80 miles to half a tank, that's doing round town driving. Also it's suddenly become very splutery when cold. Any ideas?
