absolutely gutted! :(
« on: 04 June 2011, 02:07 »
after owning my 1988 gti 8v for just 2 weeks, as i was driving along a dual carriageway tonight i noticed a rattling noise, a few miles later i pulled off and as i did the car jolted and cut out, and it wouldn't turn over at all, had to get it towed to my local garage :(

checked the oil level, and it was fine. i'm thinking a con rod may have worked it's way loose and now the engine's seized. not what you really expect from a car with a new engine with a top end rebuild in the last 2 years :(

im hoping it's not, but im kinda preparing for the worst, the fact the car jolted so much when it cut out is what worries me, and that it won't turn over at all...

Engine rebuild? Cheaper to buy a used engine and swap.

the cambelt wouldn't cause it to rattle before hand though would it? and everything in the engine bay looks exactly as it should so im pretty sure it's not the cambelt as that's been replaced in the last 2 years...

i'd rather have the engine rebuilt than buy a replacement and have this happen again, i'll see what the garage say on monday, if it's serious im tempted to fit a 2.0 8v mk3 bottom end as i'll have the engine out anyway

Get or loan a compression tester and check the obvious first before you write the engine off.

My 16V had what I thought was a major engine blow up, when the engine came out I found it just had
the head gasket blown between cylinders. I was so convinced that the noise was major engine damage
drove back on 1 or 2 cyls with bits clanking about didn't check the compressions, just bought a new engine.
