Oil Gasket / seal
« on: 03 June 2011, 18:16 »
After I got my car back from the garage and passing its MOT the guy did mention to me that there was a slight oil leak, and he's said he thinks it might be the seal / gasket thats gone

I did show him a photo of when me and my mate serviced the car and when removed the oil filter well it didn't come out as it should, the pipe it connects too was stuck in the filter and it unscrewed from the insde and took a bit of effort to twist if and remove from the old filter

now he said it would be an idea for me to remove the oil filter and replace/ check the gasket seal as this could of been disturbed while changing the filter

this fairly easy? im gunna thumb through my haynes when i get home but anyone else had a similar prob before?

This is what i can see from teh top, not sure if that is just crud or a problem

is it a valver? if so the oil cooler is part of the filter housing so i think you'll have to drain coolant to remove filter housing

Yeah is a valver, parked up at my mates and the oil light and started to flash, looked under the bonnet and could see oil seeping from the top like in those photos, little puddle under the car ffs, problems come in 3's typical!

Yeah checked the oil level which does need to be topped up slightly but ebe so it shouldn't be leaking, going to ring vw tomorrow and see how much a new gasket is

well got a new seal from VW today and ordered a new gasket which i can get on tues,

just finished replacing the seal, tbh the old one didnt look too bad but replaced it anyway but there is still a leak and its coming from here

not sure if just trying to tighten it will do any good or just to wait till the gasket comes and fit it

It's hard to see where it's leaking from with all that dirt. Get some Gunk on it and clean it all up and then you can see what's leaking.

There's 2 different seals there. There's an o ring on the top of the oil/water cooler and then the paper gasket between the filter housing and the block. Both the o ring and the gasket can be had from Euro car parts for less than £1 each. Worth replacing both at the same time as you have to remove the same bits to do both. It's not a hard job but it's messy and cleaning all the old gasket off can be a pain. You'll need a BIG socket to get the slim nut off the filter shaft to drop the cooler as well.

Drain oil
Drain coolant
remove all hoses from cooler
Drop off oil filter
remove nut and drop off oil/water cooler
unbolt filter housing
clean gasket surface
re assamble
re fill with fluids
bleed coolant
job done

cheers nick,

well I had a bit of fun with the car this morning replaced the oil seal between the cooler and filter housing had it all un bolted etc well im getting the gasket on tues thats when the gasket will be at vw that i ordered today

think i might do another job at the same time and get the new expansion tank fitted as if im draining the coolant out as well may as well do it all at once!
