can't select reverse

Right i had one of the gear linkages brake at the weekend on my mk2 golf gti the small plastic 1.
well fitted another 1 tonight but where 1st should be i get 3rd and i get 1st when i put it in reverse any ideas??

in the maintenance section i think theres a thread for setting up gear linkages  :smiley:

yeah sounds like it just needs setting up again, as above think ive seen that maint guide/help...i have a similar ssue but kinda the other way round, in that can get 5th very well.....

your gear selector is set wrong in the engine bay.
at the middle bottom and back of your engine bay you can see your gear linkages.
on the bar that runs straight under your car to your gear lever there is an adjuster on the end.
it has a 13mm bolt through it,if you slacken that off and turn it towards the passanger side then tighten it back up it should fix it,
you can buy a proper set up tool for it if you want or you can do it by trial and error.

As above. Trial and error works okay. If u put it in 5th on selector and gearbox and tighten it. It should be pretty damn close

Just to hijack this thread and add something, I have just been and adjusted the selector rod, just needed a couple of 13mm ring spanners and about 10-15mins.......quite easy, even having never adjusted selector before.
hopefully will help others too
