ECU Mods for MK IV 1.8T
« on: 03 April 2005, 14:10 »
Just recently purchased a 1999 Non fly by wire 1.8T Golf and was just wondering if anyone can recommend the best Chip or ECU re-map available that I could fit. The car is completely standard at the moment, however I am planning on doing a few other minor mods too. The car is an every day driver so I need the reliability.
I have seen the REVO ad which looks good, however a bit expensive.

Thanks,

Bragsey

afaik you don't actually fit a chip to your ecu. it's a term that's stuck around from the olden days.

any of the known tuners can remap your car, but you'll still be looking at similar prices to revo.

Thanks for the info. I have noticed that Superchips offer an upgrade, is this a re-map job too?

What one would you personally recommend? I previously had a VR6 re-mapped at AMD and they looked quite good.

Thanks for your time

For the AGU engine like yours (and mine) upsolute are very reasonably priced, the guy even comes to your home/work to do it. REVO has dropped its AGU price to 399 + vat which make it about 120ish more than upsolute, but it is a bit more of a trick map that nudges a bit more torque out early in the revs.
How long ago was your VR6 mapped ? If it was a long time ago then it was probably Geoff who did it, who then moved on doing remaps on stealth racing's rollers.. but now I'm told he's emigrated ! Nothing wrong with amd or any of the other tuners to be honest.. depends on convenience, and revo certainly have more agents than anyone else all around the country, plus they offer the SPS1 to let you turn it back to stock for services or letting the missus drive it

Thanks very much for the advice. If it was your car and money which would you personally go for?

I had the VR6 done at AMD about 2 1/2 years ago, to be honest the power went at the expense of pushing the torque further up the rev range. Very professional outfit though.

Do you recommend any other mods to complement the re-map? I suppose the usual exhaust and filter job to start with.  What power can the standard clutch cope with?

There's no "ifs" about it mate, I chose revo, and bought a SPS1 to go with it. (i wont mention the other stuff i've done, it reminds me how much the bloody car has cost me!)

Also did a full milltek (from turbo-back) stainless exhaust at the same time. A good panel filter and smoothed out air box is as good as any induction kit on the market for the mk4, and I have the proof to back that up in the form of MAF logs taken by vag-com (thanks gary m  )

You'll want to uprate your diverter valve because the flimsy plastic diaphragm tends to split at higher boost pressures created by remapped cars.

Standard clutch in good condition is suitable for up to 300lbft torque and you wont get anywhere near that without slapping a bigger turbo on.

Thanks ,  I am sold on the REVO re-map, just have to save up a bit first. Thanks also for all the other advice, before long I will begin to know what I am talking about.

Interesting to hear about using the standard air box. A lot of people are riverting back after originally fitting a cone filter.

Could you tell me what is required to modify the original box and whether it needs another cold air feed pipe.

Good to hear that VW are still over engineering their cars with regards to the power the clutch can handle.
