Bad to worse....drivers door shut solid
« on: 31 May 2011, 11:18 »
Whilst the windows failed on me yesterday todays installment is another good one....

 3dr 16v 1988 (E)
The drivers door has completely jammed shut, can't open with the handle from outside nor inside.(bit like its deadlocked) Central locking works from the key and passenger door opens/shuts/locks/unlocks fine.

Any easy way of jimmy'ing it open. (still got door card on) Is there a key process that might unlock it.....ie turn it a specific way for 3 seconds or something like that?

If this is the problem just nuke the hell out of the locking mech on the door to perspone its life, but it is on its way out.

Does it feel like the handles are loose? i.e when your pulling on the handles, they arnt actualy connected to any thing Like whne you lock the car and try the handle) chances are the rods have popped off. try and get the door card off...

hi-  yeah thats a fair point - it does feel like the car is locked even when unlocked like nothing is connected to the back side of the lever.

Will try and give it  good kicking and see if i can gt it open and then hopefully get the door card off......

Gettin the door card off will involve it being damaged, no doubt. But its the only way i think it'll be possible to get it open, nightmare!

One of my rear doors did this, chose to destroy  the handle instead. It was caused by an pattern door handle missing the mechanism inside.

I had the same issue which is why i suggested to get the door cards off.  I just about managed to get a screw driver down the sides at a really dodgy angle to get to the screws at the side. Once those were off it was plain sailing :)

door cards on a mk2 are easy.
pop off the center of the grab handle and the cover on the window winder.unscrew the screws behind them (1 on the wider and two in the handle)and they come off.push the door handle surround backwards and it will slide out of its clips.
take off the blank on the back of the door mirror.then undo the 4 screws on the outside of the card,2 on either side, then it should pull out at the top and its off, with no damage.
